Judy Yang of Belmont, California sent me her son Albert's iPod after it went in the laundry
and through the washer. It is a Nano 3rd Gen that had a Blue faceplate. I say "had" because one of the problems I couldn't fix was the scroll wheel. I couldn't make it work. On the 3rd Gen Nano, the scroll wheel is epoxied into the aluminum faceplate, to replace it you have to replace both of them and a Silve faceplate was all I had. So Albert's iPod is Silver now. He also needed the LCD replaced because backlight wouldn't work.
The LCD was $33, the faceplate/scroll wheel was $15 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $88.

Muhammad Abdullah lives in the south part of Santa Rosa, California.
His 6th Gen video iPod was in use on a rainy day. He thought his jacket would shield it the rain but it really didn't and the interior of the iPod got wet. He set the device aside and found me a few weeks later.
I was able to get all the parts of his iPod to work again except his 80GB hard drive. I gave him a few options.
1) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a 30GB drive (more than enough space really). The drive is $60 and the labor $40
2) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a 60GB drive . The drive is $80 and the labor $40
3) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a 80GB drive. The drive is $100 and the labor $40
4) not repairing it is a possibility, I can close it up after checking it for a $20 analysis fee. You can trade it in at an Apple store for 10% off of a new one ($25)
I really encouraged him toward option 1 which I believe the pinnacle of price and performance curves and I gave the "frank's iPod theory chat" which states any drive can carry an infinite amount of files because you can play only 12 hours of them before re-charging the iPod battery and almost everyone re-charges it using their computer where you can spend just 6 seconds of a 90 minute charge cycle and change the entire drive contents by dragging new playlists for iTunes over to it.
He actually went for the 80GB replacement drive at $100 and labor at $40
Fixed - Total cost $100.

Gayle Tolbert sent in her 4th Generation Photo iPod from Commerce Township, Michigan.
The iPod was throwing the error screen of the 'starry eyed sad face'. In a device of that age I have to suspect the drive first and that proved to be the problem.
While letting her know the result I mentioned it was now time to replace the battery too.
The replacement drive was $45 and a new battery was $16 with labor/return shipping
being $40
When she got it back, she wrote this,
"Frank,
Got the iPod Wednesday! Thanks so much!
Loaded the iPod back up - its working great, thanks again! So easy! And cheaper
than a new one.
Gayle"
Fixed - Total cost $101.
