Darrell Lucas called from his home in Chula Vista, California.
He liked the web site and felt it represented me as an authority on iPods well.
His 1st Generation Nano had a smashed LCD and needed it replaced. He sent it in with a check for $63 which was $23 for the LCd and $40 for labor/return shipping.
I repaired and sent it back the day after it arrived.
Fixed - Total cost $63.

John Katsmelson called me from his work in Cotati, California
about 12 miles south of here. His 60GB video iPod had suffered a mishap and he was getting the 'starry eyed sad face' error."
In fact his hard drive had been banged so badly that it had complete mechanical failure and it had the backplate smashed in as evidence of the hard life.
I sent and email outlining 3 choices for him:
"Options:
1) the 80GB drive and backplate are replaced. The drive is $100 and labor is $40, I have a better backplate I can include.
2) replace the drive with a 30GB one instead. That drive will be $60, the labor will be $40 and I have another back plate for that size I can include.
3) you elect not to repair it and sell me the parts for $65 which is 2 1/2 times what Apple will give you to trade it in."
He chose 2 and I had the iPod ready for him later that day. He was very pleased with the outcome.
Fixed - Total cost $100.

Martin Baker called me from San Francisco, California
to discuss his 5th Gen video iPod and it's lack of hearing on the right side earbud. I stepped him through things and let him know about the $35 part and the $40 labor rate.
Many days later I got another call, he had elected to buy the part on eBay and had attempted to install it himself. He thought he had done it correctly but he was not getting the iPod to work at all and wanted to send it to me to "repair his repair".
It arrived a day or so later and we agreed having him pay using PayPal made the most send once I had analyzed the problem.
His logic board had been damaged but in no obvious way and at first that wasn't obvious. I couldn't get his drive to work either... at first then I was able to get it working and narrowed down the problem.
He is a Mac user and I extracted all the music files from the device, formatted the drive and put a copy of them back on the drive so He would be able to add them back to iTunes Library. He didn't have a copy of the songs of his own.
Instructions on how to add them back to his Library permanently were email to Martin and then I sent the repaired iPod back to him.
It was $90 for the logic board and $40 for data extraction/labor/return shipping.
The shot of the settings on his iPod show the "missing drive space" of 28GB which is the music files parked on it for him.
Fixed - Total cost $130.
