Bill Jones called from Danville, California.
The scroll wheel on his Nano 2nd Generation model had stopped working. His was a pretty thorough diagnosis, but the compass point switches and the scroll wheel had stopped working which pointed to either the scroll wheel connector had become unseated since it left the factory (very unlikely) or the Application Specific Integrated circuit on the scroll ribbon connector had failed and the housing and scroll wheel would have to be replaced (which I've twice before and was more probable)
It arrived a couple of days later and I tore it down. The connector was seated properly so the ASIC had failed.
In the case of the Nano 2nd Gen, there is no way to replace the scroll wheel in the housing. There is not enough room to effect the installation of the replacement scroll so the only thing you can do is replace the housing and scroll wheel together.
The part was $35 and labor with return shipping was $40 for a total of $75
Fixed - Total cost $75.

Jason Lamb called me from Marion, Kentucky to discuss his Nano 2nd Generation model that he dropped in a soft drink.
Ultimately he sent it in from Marian Kentucky for me to take a look at.
Soft drinks are by nature acidic. Leave a bone or tooth in Coca Cola long enough and it will dissolve it.
When the iPod got here opening it was really difficult, the stickiness inside had melded the inner pieces to each other. I was able to get all the pieces exposed but the caustic nature of the soft drink had cleanly done work.
There was no evidence of corrosion but even after changing the LCD several times I was not able to get any part of it working.
Jason's iPod was sent back and I refunded him $20 of the $40 he sent.
