Andy Smith got a hold of me by email from Greenbrae, California
in Marin County about his 5th Gen video iPod. It read, "
Dear i Sick Bay:
I have an iPod 30G which gets a LOT of use! I noticed that the case is tweaked a bit and not completely "closed" on one side. Other than this the unit plays well, and I cannot detect where either side of the case is actually bent. Is this the type of thing you can fix, or should I even worry?
THANKS very much and
Cheers
Andy"
I replied that from what he described it was the backplate and I could replace it.
"Yes it would be $40 and I would probably replace the backplate if actually "racked" (out of square) or warped (rippled rather than smooth edges) the backplate.
I have backplates that look new I would just gift you as a product of the repair."
He came back with, "Wonderful! I will send it to you tomorrow at lunch. One thing I was going to ask you, but forgot, is whether or not it's possible to add more storage memory to a 30G, like make it into an 80 or 160? As you may gather, I have a huge library on Itunes!
Let me know and I will send it out to you either way.
BEST and thanks
Andy
P.S. you have one of the most effective, informational and downright entertaining websites I have seen! It makes me very happy to do biz with you!"
We decided that he would get the drive upgraded to an 80GB capacity. The drive was $100 and labor/return shipping was $40 and the backplate free. I ran a file extraction for him so could add his iTunes Library to anyone else's and sent him instructions on how to modify add them permanently to other iTunes Libraries.
Notice the screen shot. We have an 80GB drive that final formats to 74.4 GB with just 68.1 available. The difference, 6.3GB represents the extracted data/music that he will be adding to other Libraries.
Fixed - Total cost $140.

Jeff Heaton called me from Lehi, Utah to discuss his daughter's 5th Gen video iPod.
The sound from the earbud and off the docking port both seemed degraded. He wanted me to check it out and also wanted the faceplate which was pretty scratched replaced and a new battery put in it. While on the phone I out lined the problem many 5th Gen owners were experiencing which is "logic board de-lamination" and mentioned this was one of the few things that would affect sound at both earbud and docking port.
It arrived a few days later and it proved to be a partial de-lamination that was responsible for the very very slight distortion. I listened to the Cranberries and was able to discern the problem.
The battery was $19 and labor/return shipping was $40. The faceplate was $5
Fixed - Total cost $64.

Elaine Chang called me locally from Santa Rosa.
She had two iPods she wanted repaired. One that she wanted a battery replaced in was what she thought was a 4th Gen model and wanted a battery for it. The other was a iPod Mini that she wanted a new battery for *and* she wanted it to look new some how so it could be a Christmas gift for her son again.
The "4th Gen" model actually turned out to be a 2nd Generation model which batteries are no longer available for.
iPod have moved waaaaay along and don't need that amount of current and aren't nearly that size 4 times the size of
the standard hard drive model now. I brought out an opened one iPod of that vintage to point out the how the battery
from that model is so different from what is used now. Then she asked if I could do a data extraction from the 2nd
Gen so the songs could be added to her iTunes Library on her new HP Vista laptop. I actually have all the needed
firewire cables and software needed to do this and charge $40 for it, but could have it done by the next morning.
In the case of the Mini, I had a perfect looking new Blue housing with no sun fading and the needed new battery for
the Mini. I moved all of the parts over for her and installed the new battery during the migration.
The battery was $10 and labor was $40. I gifted her the housing because I wanted her son to regard it as
a new iPod to treat with respect.
Fixed - Total cost $50 & $40.
