Corey Moore called me from San Francisco.
He was having a problem with two of his iPods. One is a fairly common repair. The LCD screen had broken on his 5th Gen video iPod and needed to be replaced. The other was a 4th Generation Photo iPod that was delivering the "Starry Eyed Sad Face" error screen. He sent them both in and they arrived on December 22nd 2008.

The 5th Gen was a straight forward repair. I do this all the time. The part was $33 and labor was $40.

Determining what was wrong with the Photo took more time. It ultimately proved to be the logic board that needed to be replaced.... but the important thing was the hard drive still worked. The logic board was $35 and labor was $40

There was other part to this repair that was critical... Corey wanted me to back off a copy of all the motivational lectures he had on the Photo iPod and save them so he could add them permanently to his new iTunes Library again. The only copy he had of them was on that 4 year old iPod.

I ran the data extraction and moved the files over to the video iPod. It has a 60GB drive so it had enouggh space to accommodate the the 26GB of motivational (Anthony Robbins, Bill Rancic, Laurie Jones, Peter Thompson, Zig Zeigler, Stephen Covey and Sun Tzu among others) tapes and lectures. Notice in the shot of the video iPod the drive is formatted to ---- but only ----- is still available. That is because the drive is being used and external drive to transport the motivational files back to him.

Fixed - Total cost $73.

Rebecca Harm called me from Pullman, Washington
where she goes to school. We chatted about the problem which was moisture exposure related and she sent it in for me to attempt repair. Her 6th Gen 80GB video iPod arrived a few days later with a note explaining more about what had happened.

"I have high hopes that you may be able to fix it. On Saturday my iPod was in my purse along with a bottle of soda with a little whiskey for flavor when my soda bottle decided to to remove its cap and spill it's contents onto the iPod. I didn't think the iPod received a full immersion, but it was wet enough to shut down so now I'm sending it to you. Please do your best I'm a poor college student with few things that calm my nerves before finals and my iPod is one of them :)"

I was able to get it to work again but it required a new LCD, (the citric acid in the soft drink had corroded away a couple of the leads on the LCD's ribbon connection) and it needed a new headphone jack/hold lock switch for basically the same reason.

The LCD was $41, the headphone part was $35 and labor/return shipping was $40

The iPod works perfectly now!!

Fixed - Total cost $116.

Joop Delahaye lives in Petaluma, California
a few miles south of here and works rather nearby at the Kaiser Hospital about 5 blocks from here. He called me on the Friday after Christmas 2008 to discuss the 5th Gen video iPod he had that had a cracked screen.

This is a fairly common repair for me and we agreed he would come up on Saturday and I would repair it while waited in my waiting room reading a Rolling Stone magazine while the surgery was underway.

It all went perfectly. The LCD was $33 and labor was $40

Fixed - Total cost $73.
