Rob Ruby is a previous client from San Rafael.
He called to alert me that he had two iPod that needed help. One was a 4th Gen model with a 40GB drive. The other was a Silver anodized Mini 1st Generation.
The Silver Mini needed a new battery, very much everyday work here.
The battery was $10 and the labor/return shipping was $40.
The 20GB 4th Gen model had the folder with the exclamation mark error. This indicates a data corruption issue with the drive. In many cases the iPod will not mount and allow itself to be worked on.. but I have techniques based on my 24 years working on computers that give me edge in correcting a problem like this.
In Rob's case I was able to get the drive working but also required re-formatting it and he lost what ever music was on it. In this case.. he had it fully held in his iTunes Library so there was no problem in loosing them.
The 4th Gen model cost $40 to fix and send back. The 4th Gen is on the left.
Fixed - Total cost $50 & $40.

Michael Frisk called one day from Ellwood City, Pennsylvania
to discuss his son's iPod. The description was classic hard drive failure, and included the starry eyed sad face.
I outlined the possibilities and he sent it in with a check for $40 so I could examine it more thoroughly.
The Post Office made the delivery within 2 days on a Priority basis.
I checked it out and the drive had suffered mechanical failure. I called him and let him the diagnosis and he used PayPal to send in the additional $60 to finish the repair.
It sent back fixed the next day. Total cost was $100 which was $60 for the drive and $40 for labor/shipping.
Fixed - Total cost $100.

Steve Mankowski lives in nearby Petaluma, California.
He emailed me about the problem he was having with his Nano 2nd Generation. While in use his Nano would go into and out of the hold/lock mode. He brought it by and left it with me.
Over night his wife reminded him that the iPod had been exposed to water.
I took it apart down to removed the epoxied LCD screen so I could examine the solder pads the lock switch used. Nothing was apparent and there was no water damage. I carefully put the device together and it performed correctly afterward.
Something in it was not seated correctly.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
