Humberto Makris emailed me from Piraeus, Greece
to discuss problems he was having with two iPods. I'll admit it wasn't clear what the models or the problems were in the first email but we kept at it until I got a definite sense of what was wrong.
He had a 5th Gen video iPod that he had come apart and he was uncertain of how to re-build it or what was missing. Also he had a 3rd gen iPod that seemed to have a problem with it's scroll wheel/buttons.
He sent them in and I rebuilt the 5th Gen were insignificant so I merely gave those to him. The 3rd Gen needed the scroll wheel replaced. In that model the scroll assembly is a separate daughter board that has yet a granddaughter board on the back of the faceplate. That part was $20
The 5th Gen was $40 and the 3rd Gen was $60
Fixed - Total cost $100.

Ross Yeo called me from San Francisco
where he lives to discuss the
problem he was having with 4th Gen Photo iPod. The drive could handle
playing songs (reading the data files) but would not accept new ones being
added. Hard drives are under more stress during writes so I suspected a
permanently failed hard drive even though this iPod was recently handed to
him as a 3rd replacement refurb from Apple. At the point when this one
failed the Apple warranty was finally expired.
I was not able to get his failed to write using all the tricks I know but
I had a replacement 60GB drive that I sold to him for $45
Fixed - Total cost $85.

Maryse Bloom sent her daughters iPod in from Warren, New Jersey.
This was a
rare problem. Her daughter's Nano 2nd Gen scroll wheel wasn't working. In
my experience up to this time the reason that would occur is corrosion
due to moisture on the logic board or the components on the scroll wheel
ribbon connector.
In her case it proved to be ASIC (application specific integrated circuit
) on the ribbon connector that converts the finger movement into digital
information for the logic board's scroll wheel data port that failed. This
is extremely rare.
She needed a replacement housing and scroll wheel. I didn't have a Green
one which was the color of her daughter's but had a Silver.
The part was $35 and labor return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $75.
