Ray Valdez or Newark, California
called me from the golf course where he was playing through
another foursome that had been taking a bit too long. He had been
discussing how his iPod battery wasn't holding the charge it has when new.
By coincidence, another member of his foursome was already a client of
mine and flipped his iPod around to read the sticker with my phone I place
on each iPod I repair. We discussed the probable for a moment and agreed his
Mini 1st Generation model was more than ready for a new battery. While he
was still finishing up his round, I emailed him with directions on how to
send it in for repair.
When he got back to the office, he packed and sent it.
I got it two days later, replaced the battery and sent it back the same
day.
The battery was $10, the labor/return shipping was $40 and the hassle
factor was zero.
Fixed - Total cost $50.

Levi Wallace called from Williamsburg, Virginia
to discuss his iPod that
went through the washer. I sent him more information by email about how to
send it in.
It arrived a few days later, and on the day it arrived he called and left
a message saying, "I for got to tell you about something else with it".
I had the iPod taken apart already and knew what he failed to tell me. He
was getting sound out of just one side of the iPod's earbuds but would get
stereo out of the docking port on the bottom.
I knew this because one of the power amplifier output capacitors was
crisped on the logic board. When that cap burned up it also baked and
destroyed the LCD.
This was all separate from the damage due to the water. He had been able
to live with hearing in one *and* he was able to listen to both sides when
it plugged into his car stereo.
The water was the absolute killer.
I sent Levi back a $20 as a refund on the $40 he sent to me.
Fixed - Total cost $85.

Michael Nistler called from a friends house in Oakmont.
He lives in Petaluma, California and had a standard problem of no hearing from the
right side ear bud due to dropping it with the ear buds plugged in.
He also knew he needed an new battery and stopped by late that night and
used the "Emergency Patient Admittance System" . The 5th Gen video iPod
was admitted into surgery the next morning and got a hearing transplant
and a new battery.
Michael left a check for $98 in with the patient. It was $35 for the
earphone jack wire harness and $23 for the battery and $40 for the
labor/return shipping.
It was sent back to him the next business day.
Fixed - Total cost $98.
