Lindsay Parsons found me on the internet and called me from Meridian, Idaho.
Her water bottle had opened in her purse and doused everything in it including her 30GB 5th Generation video iPod. I explained, I never exactly know how these work out but she was welcome to send it in with $40 to have me try.
It arrived a few days later. When I opened it water actually poured out of it. It had a peppermint scent which I found later came from the chewing gum she also had in her purse.
After taking everything apart and getting all the water out and cleaning up the device, I found I was able to make all the parts work except the battery which had 3 of the 5 traces on its ribbon connection just corroded away. There was damage to the battery jack but I was able to fix that. The battery needed to be replaced. Also the LCD screen had a failed backlight trace. Information would show darkly on the screen but the white backlight wouldn't come on to deliver a white background that the "data/information" menu's to be seen against. The menu's were visible only in bright light.
The LCD was $33, the battery which was basically ready to be replaced after 3 1/2 years was $19 and
labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $92.

I got this message from in early February from Greg Dingess of Vero Beach, Florida.
"Mr. Walburg,
I found your site doing an internet search.
My daughter brought her iPod to us this morning after she realized it had been washed (but not dried) in a load of laundry last night. My first reaction was it was a total loss, but after reviewing your site I thought it might be worth a try to revive it. It is a 3rd gen iPod Nano 4 gig model# a1236. It was washed thru a whole a detergent, fabric softener and Clorox2 bleach for color clothes. I wiped down the exterior and noticed that there. was moisture visible under the cover in one corner on the display. We haven't plugged it in to the charger or computer.
Please let us know what's the next step!
Thank you for your time!
Greg Dingess
Vero Beach, Fl"
I sent him back instructions on how to send it in and it arrived a few days later with $40.
I was able to get his daughter Shaunasey's iPod working again perfectly. Total cost $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Colleen Donovan emailed me from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts
one day about her 6th Generation 80GB video iPod that had water problems. The message read,
"Hello,
I am emailing you in hope of finding out if it is possible to fix my Ipod or if i should cut my losses. A few days ago, My ipod fell out of my jacket pocket and right into a puddle of winter slush. It was playing a song while this happened, I pulled it out and wiped it off. It was still playing at this time. I tried to shut it off, but it froze and made a bunch of static like noises. I tried turning it off, rebooting it, it would not turn off at all. I slide the hold switch back and forth and basically tried every trick in the book. The screen was still on at this point, frozen. My options were, keep it on till the battery dies, or plug it into the adaptor. I decided turning it off was best, so i hooked it up to my computer, which immediately unfroze it and the menu came up, and i then turned it off. I didn't really want to send any power into it, but i wanted to turn it off. I left it in a warm dry place, in some rice to try and dry it out. I left it for several days, and it will not turn on at all. It won't power up, nor will it respond to plugging it in. I don't know if the water totally damaged it, or if it can somehow be fixed.
It is an ipod classic (80G), so i don't know if a 3rd party can open if without breaking it. I was planning on bringing it to the store, but they don't seem to care much about water damage and I figured I would ask someone who appears to have success with water damage. If you think its doable, i can send it in promptly. Let me know what you think,
Colleen"
I sent her the instructions to send it in and it got here in Friday 13th of February. I was been able to get it working in all regards... (her Anti-Flag files are safe) but it needed a new battery. The old was corroded from water beyond use.
The battery was $19 and labor/return shipping was $40. Just $59 and she got her iPod back working perfectly.
Fixed - Total cost $59.
