Mary Lehr called me from here in Santa Rosa.
She is a previous client, see here and this time the problem was her daughter Naomi had let her new 8RGB Nano 4th Gen go "through the washer but not the dryer".
She brought it to me on Wednesday afternoon. By that night I had it working again perfectly. It had perfect USB data and battery recharge connectivity.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Jeffrey Bradford sent me an email from Rochester, Minnesota
that read,
"I think the hard disk on my iPod needs replacing. I dropped it from about 5' onto our driveway, and it just hasn't been the same since :-(
When I start it, I get the dreaded "need to restore" message. Then I try again, the second time it usually works. But it often takes 30-60 seconds before it starts reading the first file, and I can hear/feel it trying to seek. So it's just a matter of time.
And since it's already going to be open on the operating table, I figure might as well get a new battery since it's 3 years old.
I do NOT need the data backed up and restored.
I'm not sure of the model, but I *think* it's the iPod video -- bought in December 2005, I think it was the first model that could play video. 30 GB hard drive.
What do you recommend? What would the total cost be?"
We messaged back and forth and established that he needed the drive replaced. While it was here replacing the battery also made perfect sense. He sent the iPod and then used PayPal to send the funds.
The drive was $60, the battery was $19 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $119.

Jeff Baum emailed me from Boston, Massachusetts
in early February 2009. The message read,
"Hi -
I found your website through searching on Google, and was hoping you can help. I have owned a 60GB iPod Classic for about 3-4 years. Recently the wheel and select button mostly stopped working. I say mostly because I cannot use them to turn on the iPod or select anything from the menu - however, I can reset the iPod by pushing Menu and select at the same time... Seems odd to me, since that shows that the sensors do seem to be working.
In any case, do you think you can repair this? Can I send to you?"
In fact he had a 60GB Photo iPod and it arrived a few days later. The scroll wheel really didn't work. When I opened it up I saw the reason. The person at the factory charged with slipping the scroll wheel ribbon connection into it's jack did a bad job and it had backed out of its jack. The same was true of the LCD connection but it hadn't become bad enough to muck up the display.
I reseated both of the connections, and let Jeff what I had discovered, then suggested given the time that a new battery might be in order. He agreed.
The battery was $15 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $55.
