Laurie Bauer is a photographer in the area, that does wedding shots and portrait work.
She has a real for lighting and composition. Like me, she is also a Canon shooter. She got a hold of me from Rohnert Park, California about two things.
One was here 3rd Gen iPod that had a battery which wasn't holding a charge. The other was her external La Cie hard drive that wouldn't spin up or mount. She needed the files off the hard drive and was there anything I could do.
The iPod battery was normal work, The battery was $17 and labor was $40.
In the case of the hard drive, I was able to make the drive work in another system so I knew it was the enclosure and it's data interface card. I mounted the drive in a new external USB 2.0 enclosure and it worked perfectly. The enclosure was $32 and labor for the drive was $60 but she got all 320GB of files back safely.
I also advised her on where and what to pay for a new larger capacity external drive *and*
what Mac model to replace her G5 Pro with (a new Mac Mini).
Fixed - Total cost $57.

Victor Garcia sent me an email from Houston, Texas
that read,
"hello, i left my ipod classic 120 Gb out in the rain unknowingly in the back of the cab of my pick up truck for about three days that it had rained straight. it had a cover but water still made it's way into the ipod. do you believe there is a chance for it to be repaired or worth me sending to you to take a look at? i have not turned on the ipod.
i read that it's $40 too take a look at the ipod. is that correct? at worst how much am i looking at spending?"
I replied back with send in instructions and his Black 6th Gen 120GB video iPod arrived a few days later. His device arrived still filled with water... I mean *filled*.
I took it all carefully apart, and re-washed and dried everything. I was able to get all the parts working again except the battery (which probably needed to be replaced anyway), the LCD which I was not able to get the backlight to work and strangely the scroll wheel.
I let him know the result which he was quite pleased about. I didn't have a Black scroll wheel replacement so I proposed a white one used on the Silver version of that model which would give it a unique "target" look. He liked the idea.
The iPod arrived on a Saturday, and I had the analysis finished that day. He paid by PayPal
for the parts on Sunday and it was repaired and on it way back Monday morning. Total round trip
time was 6 days from him to me and back in his hand again. It cost $138 to get his $250 iPod back
with his 9100 songs working perfectly again.
Fixed - Total cost $138.

Steve Van Loan cal;led me from Wheaton, Illinois
to discuss his daughters 5th Gen video iPod. Her hold/lock switch wasn't working... actually it was permanently in the "locked" position. Also Becca's iPod had on it the only copy of all of iTunes Music. As I've said more than a few times, I consider Windows a frail and lame operating system. There is nothing about it that should lead anyone to think their files are safe. Here system had "one of those mishaps" and it took all of her files along with it. (Yes I do use Windows but for anything important, important things reside on my Mac Mini). Steve also wanted me to run a data extraction and park the files so his daughter could add them back to new Windows iTunes Library.
It arrived a few days later. The switch had actually snapped on the small paddle on the switch it actually controlled. However it snapped it off in the "locked position". I corrected that then ran the files extraction.
Notice in the photo she has ZERO songs on it but 20GB is missing. That "other" is the 20Gigs of music I extracted and placed back on it for her.
The total cost was $40 get her iPod back working and all of her music back into her iTunes Library.
Fixed - Total cost $40.
