Daniel Peters called me from San Francisco, California.
He works at the Maxx's restaurant chain that has a place in Union Square and another in Marin County where the old Peppermill used to be. He has two iPod that he needed to have looked at, one was a 5th Gen video iPod and the other was 6th Gen 80GB video iPod. While we were on the phone I was able to diagnose the 5th Gen as having a failed hard drive.
He sent them both in with enough money to replace the drive in the 5th Gen and my $40 labor fee for the 6th Gen model.
Strangely, the 6th Gen had the same problem... a failed hard. I sent him this message,
"Remember you have already paid the $40 labor charge on this iPod
1) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a 30GB drive (more than enough space really). The drive is $60 and the labor $40
2) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a 80GB drive . The drive is $100 and the labor $40
3) replace the original 120 GB hard drive with a 120GB drive. The drive is $120 and the labor $40
4) not repairing it is a possibility, I can close it up after checking it out and refund $20 of the $40 you sent. You can trade it in at an Apple store for 10% off of a new one ($25)
If this were my decision to make, I would go with the 30GB. The larger sizes are rarely needed since the
battery fully charged in this iPod will be able to play just 1/25 of the songs if it were fully filled...
that's on a 30GB drive and it would only be able to play 1/15 if the 30GB drive were filled with videos.
Since it will be cabled to your computer to charge between 15 and 25 times before playing it all once, there
is more than enough opportunity to change out the songs on the iPod while it connected to your iTunes Library.
Remember the Library is the repository and the iPod player is merely a chalk board that can be changed continually."
He decided on the 30GB drive and sent in the $60 via PayPal.

Aubrey Gray lives here in Santa Rosa, California
and called me to see about getting his iPod working again. In conversation I realized he owned a 1st Generation Mini and the problem was his battery *seeming* to not hold a charge. I told him the battery would $10 and labor would be $40. He brought it by later on that day.
In fact he had a failed logic board *and also* needed a new battery. Since my primary mission is to
keep iPods alive and working and his in a near new state might be worth $60 I decided to replace his
logic board at no charge. I had the part and giving it to him would make good use of it.
I did charge him for the battery and labor, but the device works perfectly now.
Fixed - Total cost $60.

Heather Sommerer's fell in the toilet.
She emailed me from Jefferson City, Missouri about it. The message read,
"Hi,
I found you on a google search. I'm sure you've heard this one a hundred times but my one year old took my ipod for a swim in the toilet (clean water thank god!). I immediately opened it and dried it gently as best I could. I then put it in a bowl of rice to dry for two days. I went ahead and attempted to charge it tonight and I was pleasantly surprised that it came on! But it clicked a whole bunch and then the sad ipod face icon came up, dashing all of my hopes. If I send it to you do you think it can be repaired? I am going crazy without my music and am not in a financial position to buy a new one anytime soon."
I emailed back instructions on how to send it in and it arrived a few days later. I took it all apart, re-cleaned and dried things and was able to get everything to work except the hard drive which basically was what she heard with the crunching.
The replacement drive was 460 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $80.
