Kelly Duisen called me in early February from Knoxville, Tennessee
about her son's that was in his pants pocket with his earbuds still wrapped around it when she pulled it out of the washer. This was her son Drew's basically brand new 8GB $200 Nano 4th Gen Christmas present.
She found me on the internet and that prompted the call. She was also having problems with her iPod which I have a feeling was actually her son's old one. (She confessed not knowing much about how to use it.)
I was able to get Drew's iPod working again perfectly with no additional parts needed.
In her case, she seemed to have a connectivity problems but I got it on track and sent her back a new USB data cable to go along with it.
Drew's repair was $40 paid through PayPal.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Erick Serda called me from South El Monte, California
about his 5th Generation video iPod. His 60GB system had hearing from the left side only and it was... infuriating him. We discussed the problem and how it came to be. I let him know I fix this all the time, and then sent him to my work replacing the earbud jack.
He sent it in a few days later. I got it at 2pm on a Friday and had it repaired and sent back to him at 4pm that same afternoon.
The headphone jack was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40.
Fixed - Total cost $68.

Lance Schroeder sent me a message on February 5th 2009 from Prior Lake, Minnesota.
The message read,
"Hi,
Enjoyed your web site and your obvious work ethic!
My son has a 30 GB, 5th Gen Video iPod. He also has occasionally had difficulty with bed wetting....... We discourage him from sleeping with his iPod, but one night, he forgot.
I'm certain you can guess the source of the moisture damage.
I'm reasonably proficient repairing iPods, many times I've replaced batteries, upgraded hard drives, etc. for family and friends. But, I'm obviously not in your league, and I have no prior experience with water damage.
I opened my son's iPod, disassembled it, cleaned it up as best I knew how, and aired it out for a day. When I put it back together. It did not work. I did not use any cleaning solutions, or any of the tools you mentioned. I just used a cloth and a soft bristled brush. I did not 'burnish' any area that had 'lead-oxide corrosion', because I wasn't sure what I was looking for.
Do you think it would be worth looking at? Would you be willing to look at it for us?
Thanks for your time,
Lance"
I messaged him back with the specifics and it arrived on Feb 10th. The device was completely destroyed.
The front and back of the logic board had as much corrosion as I would see in a saltwater
case with long exposure. The 'barnyard acid' had destroyed the logic board, the hard drive and the battery.
There was no way to make an effective repair so I put it all back together and sent it back with a $20 bill
as a refund on the $40 since I couldn't repair it.
