Caroline Mitchell called me from Pittsburg, Pennsylvania
about a problem she was having with her 3rd Generation iPod. As we went through that she went onto describe a problem she was having with her Sony digital camera. This is that story.
She "bought it 2006 and it worked faultlessly until a sandstorm on Lake Erie in October of 2008. The lens was out at the time and when I powered it down the lens made squeaking, grinding sound and retracted slowly." Her diagnosis was sand in the barrels of the lens causing the lens to get stuck in the housing going in and out. "The next power on the lens came out with a weird noise and retracted on power down. Even with new batteries I can't get the lens to come out again."
I disassembled the camera and blew everything out with a high pressure bottle of nitrogen I use for my winemaking.
Even that didn't solve the problem because the outer shutter was acting improperly and not revolving fully open. I worked at that and got the shutter going then the lens assembly to work.
Works perfectly now. Total cost for Caroline was $60.
These are shots with the camera "Off" and then "On".
She sent this message once she got them back,
"
Thanks 1,000,000!
Dear Frank:
I am so pleased to get my ipod classic and my Sony Cybershot camera back, both in perfect working order. The Sony Cybershot has a known lens problem where the lens sticks and the camera then shuts off and gives an 'access' message even though the batteries are fine. SONY wanted $$$$$ and $100 just to LOOK at the camera. this camera. You did a wonderful job for much less.
And I am so glad to get my own ipod back.. (after a data port failure caused no doubt by my using one of the ipod car players.) (which you in fact warn against...) Last time I sent my ipod to Apple for a mere battery replacement, much to my shock Apple sent me back some one else's' ipod.. of unknown history. very shortly after that the 'dataport' went , and the ipod would not charge or play music..
I have recommended you to all my geek friends so hope you are inundated with many new customers. I couldn't be gladder.
fair winds and calm seas to you,
Caroline in pennsylvania"
Fixed - Total cost $60.

Andrew Liu found me on the internet and emailed from Menlo Park, California
on January 19th 2009. It read,
"Hi,
I have an ipod video from winter 2005/6. Recently the earphone jack has started to have problems and sound only comes out of one ear (sometimes no sound at all). I have seen online that this is not too hard to fix, but I am too scared to do it myself. Do you think this is a job you could do? I live in Menlo Park and could mail the ipod to you by Wednesday. But I am leaving town by next Friday (Jan. 30). Could you mail it back in time?
thanks
best
andy"
I sent back a message that this was easily doable and his iPod arrived 2 days later on Saturday January 24. I replaced the hearing jack module and sent it back that same day so he would get it back on Monday January 26th before he even noticed it had been missing. I'm waiting to hear what he says about the service.
The headphone jack hold/lock switch wire harness was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40
On Monday January 26th at 10:07am I got this message,
"got the ipod and it works great.
thanks,
andy"
Fixed - Total cost $68.

Joel Ramirez called me from Vallejo, California
about his 5th Generation video iPod. He speaks spanish as his primary language, but has a good grasp of english. We were unable to discern the problem on the phone so arranged that he would come by on the weekend and leave it off for me to examine.
When he got and a moment with it, I knew what the problem was. The hard drive had failed from being dropped. I told I needed it for a bit over an hour make the replacement happen.
An hour later he came back, the drive was replaced and the device worked perfectly.
I left the menus set up in spanish for him. The drive was $60 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $100.
