I got an email from Eli Boggs who lives here in Santa Rosa, Califormnia
about his 5th Gen 30GB video iPod that read,
"I've got an iPod I believe you've fixed before, and it's having the same problem again (won't play out of one side of the headphones). I wanted to know how much this would be to fix, and how long it would take, since I'll be going out of country this weekend and would like to have it fixed up before I go. If you can help, thanks!"
I emailed back relevant information and he dropped by two days later and left the iPod off for an hour for me to repair it.
The headphone jack was $28 and labor was $40. The iPod works perfectly now.
Fixed - Total cost $68.

Bruce Bragonier is pediatric orthropedist who lives and works in Sebastopol, California.
He moved here from Michigan about three years ago and bought into a private practice. There are fewer and fewer doctors that have their own practice these days. The other three docs I know all work for Kaiser now. Bruce's son Jake let his iPod Nano 3rd Gen go through the washing machine and Bruce having driven past my sign out front, remember about me and called.
Naturally he was pretty amazed by several things... one was that I used the whole and medical metaphor, which he fully understood. Another was that I was able to repair iPods at all. And the third was that on planet earth more people send their iPods to me for water immersion than anyone else *and* I lived within 11 miles of him... what luck!!
He brought the iPod to me on Saturday January 24th 2009. By the next afternoon I had it apart and had cleaned it up and gotten everything working but the LCD screen which had serious corrosion on three traces on its ribbon connector, one of which was the positive connection to the backlight. In fact the LCD worked, it's backlight didn't.
I replaced the LCD and called him. He was impressed it was finished in less than a day... the LCD was $22 and
labor was $40.
Oh by the way... Jake really hoped I wouldn't be able to fix it so he would be able to get a new iPod Touch model.
I don't think I've made a friend with him yet.
Fixed - Total cost $62.

Mark Mora sent me his iPod from Tracy, California.
Initially he found me on the internet and gave me a call to discuss his repair. He had dropped it in a swimming pool 3 weeks earlier and was hoping I would be able to fix post water immersion.
I went through the device cleaning and testing everything. I was able to get all the parts to work to except the hard drive... even the battery I got working. The connection for the hard drive is right behind the docking port on hard drive iPods. If they aren't attended to sooner than 3 weeks they have a good of the controller card suffering enough corrosion build up they can't be saved. He used PayPal to send the $60 for the replacement drive.
For $100 he got his iPod back working perfectly.
Fixed - Total cost $100.
