Jane Barnett emailed me from Mississauga Ontario Canada
The message read,

"I just tried to call you but I don't think your toll-free number works from Canada. I accidentally washed my daughter's Ipod in the laundry. We've had it sitting in a bowl of rice for several weeks now and while the screen shows no moisture, the thing doesn't work. Do you handle repairs from outside the US? If so, please let me know and tell me if you can fix the Ipod.

Thanks very much.

Jane Barnett"

I emailed her back the instructions and it arrived a few days later. I was able to get it working again perfectly without added parts. All of her daughter Jil's 459 songs were intact. The total cost was $40.

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Daniel Mestas is a previous customer who lives in Glendora, California.
The scroll wheel... well actually the compass point buttons on his 6th Gen video iPod wouldn't work. He spent a few minutes on my site and realized it was probably the scroll wheel.

I've mentioned the scroll in the 6th Gen is 8 times more likely to fail than the one in the 5th Gen video iPod. The new has no grounding strap and this seems to make a difference.

I replaced the scroll wheel and the iPod works again... perfectly. This shows his "Setting -> About" menu which require the scroll wheel and buttons work to get to it.

The part was $38 and labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $78.

Mai Weston sent me an email from San Diego
that read,

"Dear Frank,

Sadly, I left an open water bottle in my purse yesterday and my iPod was soaked. It was wet for about 4 hours before I discovered it. Its an iPod Classic 80Gb. I'd like to send it to you this week if that is all right.

Thanks, Mai Weston"

I sent her instructions on how to send it in to me and it arrived a few days later with a note that read, "Thanks in advance for your services. This iPod was and anniversary gift from my husband and it is dear to me! I will be so happy if it can be repaired!

Sincerely, Mai Weston."

It arrived on Wednesday around 2pm and I was still working on it at 10pm. The next morning I had finally had worked through it and had my result (not very good) then sent her this message,

"Mai,

There are a quite a few things that I can't make work again. These would make the repair not cost effective. However I can't address the sentimentality aspect so here are the results.

1) The hard drive doesn't work. You hear clunking and movement but it won't find the master boot track. It can't be made to work. The replacement is $100

2) The logic board doesn't at all, it won't light a new LCD screen (and this after my best efforts dealing with the water and corrosion it had) so the damage is pretty deep there. That part is also $100

3) the LCD screen has water trapped between the layers. It actually has a purple/bluish tint through it when tried in a good 6th Gen iPod. That part is $41

Put those together with the $40 I charge and it exceeds the value of the device, I can't put a price on the fact that was given as a gift so I can't evaluate whether you would want to move forward with this.

If you don't, I'll be sending it back with a $20 refund. Frank"

She came back with,

"Frank, I appreciate your efforts. Please send the device back to me. I do not wish to have it repaired any further. Mai Weston"

Total cost for Mai to know there was nothing on planet earth that would make a difference... $20
