Jen Sunderquist from Lincoln Creek, Oregon sent me an email
that read
"Subject: Help; ipod washed
I caught it 5 minutes into the washing machine, but it's not looking good. This devastates me, as I love my Ipod considerably. It's a 5th generation nano 8--I believe. What can I do? What would it cost to repair--or should I just replace... I haven't had it very long.
Thanks,
Jennifer Sundquist"
I sent emailed for clarification and how to send it in. Her follow up message read:
"Hi Frank,
It's a 4th generation nano. I read that putting a wet ipod in rice would cure the problem. It did not. I'm mailing it priority tomorrow and will Paypal you $40.00. How much does an LCD light cost?"
I've commented a few times that the rice treatment robs the iPod of potential life saving time. Water immersed electronic devices need to be opened and cleaned to prevent lead oxide corrosion and there ZERO chance a bag of rice will do it. At best, in some cases where the exposure was small at the outset you may find the device will work post-rice for a period of time, but because you haven't stanched the lead oxide corrosion build up at some point in the future the device will stop working permanently. Most people think when that happens later, it was a bad car adapter, docking station or something else that caused it to die without ever tying it back to the water exposure.
Jen,
It's official, I can't make this one work again. The problem is both the logic board and the LCD have permanent damage.
Apple in the 4th Gen Nano solders a ribbon to the logic board that seats into the LCD which has a jack on it. They have never done this before. Your ribbon had corrosion to the LCD back light connections. That same corrosion migrated to the LCD knocking it out. I had hoped that cleaning the ribbon would allow a new LCD to be able to work with it.
The corrosion had permanently eradicated two of the leads. I was not able to get it to work again with a new LCD screen.
I'll send it back with a $20 refund.

Jennifer Loudermilk sent me an email message from Lula, Georgia
that read,
"Hello -
I accidentally washed my husband's Ipod in the washing machine. It is an Ipod Nano 3rd Generation. I Googled how it could possibly be fixed and found your website. Can I send the Ipod to you next week to see if it can be fixed?
Thanks for your consideration and assistance."
I sent her back instructions to send it in and got back this,
"Thanks for the quick reply. I think it's worth a try. I will send the Ipod out on Monday and will pay by paypal."
It arrived on Saturday April 5th. I had her son Ronnie's Black Nano 3rd Gen working again by the end of the afternoon.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Phillip Thompson called me from Elberton, Georgia
about his wife's Green Nano 2nd Generation iPod. The problem was the screen was "buzzing" showing bursts of data at a rate to high to understand. I've seen this before and it requires the LCD to be replaced. I gave him instructions on how to send it in. It arrived a few days later on a Saturday. By later that afternoon, I had the LCd replaced and it worked perfectly again.
The LCD was $10 and labor return shipping was $40, total cost to get it back working perfectly with all of her intact was $50
Fixed - Total cost $50.
