Brenda T called me from Fallbrook, California
about her 6th Gen video iPod. The LCD had a number of pixels that had stopped working and that number kept getting bigger. As she described it, "I could tell the LCD hadn't been cracked or broken". It was genuinely a defective LCD from the factory that was getting more defective continually.
I told her to send it in so I could replace it. The iPod got here on a Friday and I had it finished and out on the way back
to here by Saturday. The LCD was $41 and labor/return shipping was $40
On April 9th at 7:45am I got this message from Brenda.
Thanks:)
Thank you! I've received my iPod and its screen works beautifully. I noticed on the website you put my case up, but can I have my last name made to an initial "T?" Sorry for the inconvenience to change that; I know my name is common and all, but I still prefer having less info out there. But if any of my friends or co-workers need an iPod repair, I'll be glad to reference you. Thanks so much again :)
Fixed - Total cost $81.

William Dolan lives in San Francisco, California
and had a problem with his iPod. He sent me this email,
"Hi Frank,
I was referred to you by the iPod store in S.F. I need my iPod
repaired, specifically, the head phone jack. The iPod store verified
that the jack is defective/broken. What this means is that when I
plug a working set of head phones into the jack, I get only one
channel of sound. This issue has been progressively getting worse, in
that I used to be able to wiggle the head phone jack and get them
working, but after awhile, one channel of sound went totally dead. We
tried cleaning the jack out, but that didn't work.
I am able to come to Santa Rosa one day this week if you would be able
to fix the iPod while I waited. Let me know if you can help me, how
much it will cost, and when a good day to come up there would be. My
schedule is flexible, so I can come whenever you would be able to
repair the iPod in the least amount of time. Thanks.
-Bill Dolan
P.S. The iPod works fine when plugged into speakers via the port on
the bottom, so outside of the headphone jack, I think everything else
is working perfectly."
I sent him a couple of links showing him I had solved this for many people already and he could send it up and it would get done and back to him in 3 days.
He replied back,
"Sounds good. In the interest of getting the iPod repaired quickly
(same day), I would like to drive it up. I have an open schedule
right now, and considering the nice weather, I wouldn't mind riding my
motorcycle up in your direction. Therefore, I can drop it off and
come back a few hours later. I was considering a day trip up to
Sonoma anyway, so I could fit it in anytime. Please let me know when
you will be available. Thanks."
In fact he sent it in anyway. It arrived on a Saturday and I had it finished and on the way back to him Monday morning.
The headphone jack/hold-lock switch was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $68.

I got an email from Magda Morales in Malakoff, Texas
that read,
"Hello
I was hoping you can fix my IPod video, I think it is a fifth generation. I've had it for a while hoping I could fix it. But never knowing where to go or what to do.
I would use my IPod whenever I would run on the treadmill, and since I was not paying attention it went through a whole load in my washing machine. I tried to play it but all I could hear was a clicking sound. So my brother suggested letting it dry. For a week I left it outside, it worked but the light would not come on. So I left it under a lamp and now it does not turn on at all. When I would try to charge it it would make a clicking sound. Now I cannot turn it on. I think I fried it.
That was in the summer of 2007, the following July I forced the screen open thinking that I could somehow do something. I did not know why I did I just know that I did. I hope I did not make things worse. I wanted to send it sooner but I had no way of doing this since I was short on cash.
Also I have a Playstation 2 that does not want to work. It turns on but after a while it says that it cannot read the disk. It is thin but a bit heavier upon inspecting that my cousins was less heavier. If you can fix these I would be eternally grateful.
Much gratitude, Magda."
She sent the iPod in with enough money to cover replacing the LCD screen which she knew was going to be a problem. That wasn't the only problem though. So much time had passed the logic board was permanently damaged and had lost scroll wheel control. Also the hard drive couldn't be made to work. There was enough wrong with the iPod that not repairing it was the only practical course. I sent it back with a cash refund of $53 from the $73 she sent in with it.
For $20 she settled once and for the question, "will this iPod ever work again?" Now she knows.
