Caitlin Richards emailed me from her work, Fiasco Fine Wine in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
Her message read,

"Frank,

I have a 30gb iPod - on the older side - that is giving me trouble. It is making a clicking sound all the time and will play maybe 4 songs before quitting, even when on a charger. The display will then show a picture of an ipod with a sick looking face. It is hooked up to my computer now, and the computer asked me to do an update, which I did - now it is just blinking "do not disconnect" at me, alternated with "very low battery". I have dropped it several times in its life, though never in water or other liquid. I'd much prefer to get this fixed than to get a new ipod. Do you think there's any hope?

Caitlin"

I knew the problem I was hearing about and sent back this message,

"You actually have a failed hard drive. At times it presents and totally gone, other times (and they will be fewer) it seems to play songs.

This will be a tormenting experience until you have the drive replaced.

There actually have 3 options at this point.

1) replace the original 30 GB hard drive with a 30GB drive (more than enough space really). The drive is $60 and the labor/return shipping is $40

2) replace the original 30 GB hard drive with a 80GB drive . The drive is $100 and the labor/return shipping is $40

3) replace the original 30 GB hard drive with a 120GB drive. The drive is $120 and the labor/return shipping is $40

If this were my decision to make, I would go with the 30GB. The larger sizes are rarely needed since the battery fully charged in this iPod will be able to play just 1/25 of the songs if it were fully filled... that's on a 30GB drive and it would only be able to play 1/15 if the 30GB drive were filled with videos. Since it will be cabled to your computer to charge between 15 and 25 times before playing it all once, there is more than enough opportunity to change out the songs on the iPod while it connected to your iTunes Library. Remember the Library is the repository and the iPod player is merely a chalk board that can be changed continually."

She sent it in with a check for $100 to replace the drive with a 30GB one.

With the new drive in it worked perfectly.

Fixed - Total cost $100.

Hannah Mc Merriman emailed me from Pomfret Center in Connecticut.
The message read,

"Hi,
I found your website while trying to find an answer for my ipod problem. My family and I were camping and my ipod got a little wet/damp. It can turn on and off, the screen is fine, but the click wheel will not work. I have a 4th generation ipod color. I googled ways to fix it, putting in a bowl of rice etc. but its not working! I checked your prices and its $60 for a repair. Can I send it to you in the mail?
Thank you, Hannah"

I had her send it in with just $40 for me to analyze things before she sent in the $20 for a scroll wheel. It arrived a few days later and took it apart to deal with the water and it's problems.

I was able to get it all to work except the scroll wheel, so that was actually the answer. She sent the $20 via PayPal.

Works perfect, looks new for just $60

Fixed - Total cost $60.
