Jeff Salkowski emailed me Glassboro, New Jersey about his 6th Generation video iPod.
It had been exposed to water the day before. I sent him instructions on how to send it in.
The next day I got this message,
"Just got back from the post office. Sent it and it should be there by 3 pm tomorrow apparently. I will be paying via paypal although I am currently waiting on some funds to process to be able to pay you. Since this is a water exposure case, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try and attend to it asap and I will probably be able to pay you for services tomorrow. You can keep my ipod until you are paid as collateral. Sorry I can't pay you today, but I recently moved a bunch of money around.
Thanks so much"
Jeff understands how time critical it is to get the iPod taken apart and looked after. In the past when I've encountered college students without funds at the moment, I tell them to send it in, I'll do the work but won't reveal the result until I've been sent the $40. That allows the greatest chance for success.
A week or so later he got a hold of me and sent the $40 via PayPal. I sent him the results. I had been able to get his iPod back and working again except for his hard drive. He chose to replace his 80GB drive with the same size.
The drive was $100 and labor/return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $140.

Shalimar Vavra lives here in Santa Rosa, California
out by Ellen Oneal ( who was married to one of the founders of Young American Homes). She dropped her 6th Gen video iPod in water and the device was mis-behaving. She called and brought it by. There was light damage to the logic board and that seemed to be the origin of her problems. Once I had the corrosion dealt with the iPod worked perfectly again.
Total cost $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

I got a call from Joel Wolfson discussing Suzi Cohen's iPod.
A relative who lives in Chicago had preloaded several audio books onto their 4th Gen Black and White iPod. The problem they were having now was.
1) Their iPod was formatted for a Mac since that's what their relative used (smart relative) and they wanted to migrate the audiobooks to their new PC, so they needed a data extraction.
2) change the headphone module. there was some complaint about how it worked (though it sounded fine to me) so that was replaced.
3) park the extracted files on their iPod so they could add them to their new Windows machine.
4) reformat iPod as a Windows formatted iPod
5) replace the battery
The battery was $15 and everything else was just $40. Total price was $55
Fixed - Total cost $55.
