I got a call from Simual Lenoir who lives in Berkeley, California.
He goes by his middle name Gary and he described his Nano iPod 3rd Gen as having a bad LCD. Further conversation revealed the iPod's backlight being on but no data was painting to the screen.
Since he works overnight and needs it every day, he decided to drive up and have me replace the LCD, while he waited.
When he came by I realized why the LCD went bad. He didn't tell me ion the phone that he had run the iPod through the washing machine a few weeks ago. I explained I wasn't exactly sure I could make the device work again but I would try as he went shopping here in town.
Once I had it apart I went through it and replaced the LCD. I was able to get it working perfectly again.
The LCD was $22 and labor was $40 so for $62 is made to work perfectly again.
Fixed - Total cost $62.

Stacy Lawver emailed me from Park City, Montana
about her 6th Generation "Classic" 120GB video iPod. The message read,
"I have been reading your stories of rescuing ipods from water damage. On June 20th I dropped my into a mop bucket. I panicked and not thinking, I immediately tried to turn it on to see if it worked. Of course it didn't. The screen went white for a few hours and then black. It is now unresponsive and not recognized by my computer. I just figured it was a lost cause until I saw your site. Is this something you think could possible be repaired?"
This is a model I am able to make work again in 14 out of 15 cases. I sent her back the specifics and the iPod arrived a few days later.
I went through the device cleaning, correcting and fixing. I was able to get it to work perfectly again, but it needed two parts. The scroll wheel really damaged from corrosion and had to be replaced and the battery had 2 of its 5 leads corroded away and needed to be replaced.
The battery was $19 and the scroll wheel was $38. For $97 she her "Mom's iPod" back working perfectly.
I got a message from her after it arrived back home that read,
"Frank,
I got my ipod on Monday and I just wanted to thank you! It is so exciting when you think that it is a lost cause and then you get it back like nothing was ever wrong with it. You have wonderful customer service too. I am definitely keeping your card close by for the next "accident."
Thank you again,
Stacy"
Fixed - Total cost $97.

Nicole Peterson emailed me from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
The message read,
"My brother is updating to a new ipod and I'm buying his old one for my fiance...but it is a little broken. It seems like the wheel is not quite right. My brother also thought maybe it was a programming thing. Either way, I need it fixed. I'm wondering how long it would take, because the wedding (it's a wedding gift) is on Friday, July 24th. If I send it in then next day would you be able to get it back to Wisconsin before the 24th? If not, I'll just wait to send it until after the wedding. Let me know and if you think it will work, I'll send it off to you.
Thanks,
Nicole Peterson
Sun Prairie, WI"
I sent her back specifics and the iPod arrived within two days, on the 15th. I took it apart and examined it. The problem was.. would best be described as a manufacturing defect. The scroll wheel in that model has a "ground strap" that fastens to the iPod chassis. This ground or neutral allows the scroll wheel measures body capacitance as the finger moves across it. It relies on that ground as an accurate reference measurement.
The ground strap was never correctly placed at the factory. This was always a problem from the day it was built.
I corrected it and had it on the way back to her the next day. It arrived on Monday the 20th.
The repair was just $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.
