Kerry Hanlon lives here in Santa Rosa, California
and teaches at the Sonoma Academy which is a religious private school found me on the internet. She sent a message that read,
"Hi Frank,
I have a 4G ipod mini and the battery isn't working well anymore. I live in Santa Rosa. Would you fix it if I bring it over? Would it be $40? When would be convenient? Thanks!
Kerry"
We set up a time and she dropped it off using my "emergency patient admittance" system. I called her when I had it ready to pick up.
The labor was $40 and I gifted her the battery, that brought the cost of repair in line with the value of the device.
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Eric Lippert sent me his Silver 6th Gen 80GB video iPod from Jackson, Wyoming
with a check for $40 and a letter that read,
"Hi Frank,
Here's my iPod and here's what happened:
It jumped out of my shirt pocket while I was hunting morels and landed in about 4 inches of water. It was submerged for 3 to 4 seconds. When I got home I did a couple of stupid things. First from advice on the web, I attempted to take it apart to let it dry. As you can see I succeeded in scratching up the case. Second, on the advice of a friend, I put it in a ZipLoc bag of kosher salt in an attempt to absorb the moisture."
It turns out the worst thing you do is drop an iPod in Salt water, the second worst thing is believing you can use Salt as a desiccant, in fact what you do is create a salty sea breeze inside you iPod to enhance the water corrosiveness.
I was able to get all aspects of Eric iPod to work again... except the logic board. I'm certain it was the sale laden air that did it.
The replacement logic board was $90 and labor/return shipping was $40.
Fixed - Total cost $130.

Paul Harrington is a Brit that runs the Brighton Clean Pool Service in Vista, California.
I'm pretty sure you see where this is going already... he called me one day to discuss his Nano 4th Gen iPod that arrived a few days later with a letter which read,
"My iPod was dropped in a pool Wednesday at lunchtime for a 1 1/2 minutes. I've enclosed a check for $40"
The iPod was a gift from his wife. I was able to get it working again perfectly but it required having the LCD replaced. The LCD was $33 and labor return shipping was $40
Fixed - Total cost $73.
