Brooks Anderson from here in Santa Rosa
called asking if would take apart his Motorola RAZR phone to reseat the connections, remove debris and clean the device because had a static quality likely caused by all the things that float in his coat pocket and found their way into it.
He brought it over in the late evening so I would have it overnight when he was less likely to be called.
I started that night and finished taking it all apart and cleaning it the next morning. Here are shots of the device open and filled with "pocket powder".
I returned it to him the next morning. The cleaning charge for the RAZR
was $20.

Betty Bynum from Cedarcrest, New Mexico
called because she saw I was an water immersion expert related to iPods.
She sent in her iPod with a few requests. She wanted me to hopefully take care of the water damage to it. She also wanted me to extract the song and photos from it and then re-format her video iPod from a Windows FAT32 format to the MAC HFS format and then put all her songs and photos on it.
She thought the problem was oxide corrosion related to headphone/hold-lock switch because she got no audio from her earbuds but did through the docking port connection.
In fact the problem was corrosion on the logic which had knocked out the headphone output amplifiers.
The logic board is $100 and a needed replacement battery was $23 and then the labor/return shipping at $40 bought the potential total to $163. We both thought that might be more than she had in mind and agreed to have do the data extraction, format the drive, move the files over to the drive and send the iPod using it as a transport vehicle to recover all the songs and photos she had on it but hadn't backed up before her computer failed.
Total cost for here data extraction, parking the files and sending the iPod back with exact instructions to add them
permanently to her iTunes Library... $40
Fixed - Total cost $40.

Matt Clegg contacted me by email from Vermont
where he goes to school. He has a 4th Generation Photo iPod that was dropped in water weeks and weeks earlier.
We both agree there is no certainty if I can or will not be able to fix it
so he sends it in with $40... well actually $56. We agree that if I can get working I should replace the battery in it. and the added $16 will cover the cost of the battery.
When it gets here I pull apart and begin to process it for water immersion but the odds are long. Quite a bit had gone by and the corrosion was considerable. I am not able to resuscitate it.
It was sent back to Matt with $36 in cash as a refund for the battery and the "unable to make it work" refund of $20.
