And this next case was a Haily Mary! Tim Sinson from Flagstaff, Arizona
found me through my website and the water immersion stories on it.

He sent his in with a check for $40 and considering the condition of it.. a prayer. It had been dropped in teh Colorado River 15 months earlier and put in a drawer.

I opened the iPod and gave it about zero chance of survival... ZERO. There are some shots here showing the rust on the hard drive case and severe corrosion on the logic board.

I went to work on it, testing to see what was good. The battery cleaned up and I tested in a "known good system" and it worked. The headphone jack and hold lock switch worked. I put the drive in a known good and it worked. Then I started to process the corrosion on the logic board and tested it repeatedly ultimately getting it to work. Then the LCD... and I got it to work.

An iPod that I considered Officially Pronounced Dead brought back to life.

Here are a few shots of the corrosion and the device working again.

Fixed - Total cost..$40.

Julie Stevens of Alta Loma, California found me also using the internet.
Her Blue 2nd Generation Nano got doused in Chloraseptic when the bottle broke in her backpack.

She sent it in with a check for $40.

I took it apart and though there wasn't the obvious damage I expect to see with a water case after working on it for a few hours I wasn't able to get it to work past an all white screen. The logic board was permanently damaged in some related to how the data (menu information) painted to the screen. I tried a couple of new LCD's and none would make a difference.

Julie got her iPod along with a $20 refund. I couldn't bring this back to life.

Julie Fandrem of Santa Rosa (right here in Santa Rosa)
found me through my Yellow Pages ad. She had two things she needed repaired. One was her 3rd generation iPod which needed a new battery, the other was her iBook.

She came over and dropped off the iPod and brought her laptop. Through other means she had learned the logic board needed to be replaced.

I replaced the battery in less than hour. The battery was $17 plus the $40 labor.

For laptop... she had an original G3 500mhz iBook, replacing the logic board on that device would be silly. Instead I'm assisting her in finding a used MUCH better iBook, in fact I've sighted one for $600 that is 15 times the machine she had. I will migrating all her files over to it once we've gone to San Anselmo to buy the much better replacement. A good far better laptop was the better more effective choice to solve this problem. Replacing the logic board would have been the first step in a series a part failures in her machine leading to frustration and disappointment.

More on her machine when we get it here. Here she is with her fixed iPod.

Fixed - Total cost..$57.
