Mike Shanley emailed me on April 14th from Indianapolis, Indiana with this message,
"My son has an Ipod 30 gb Video that started locking up and now will do nothing. I believe I purchased it in December 2007. I tried to do the reset but it never worked. He also has a 3rd generation Nano that got washed with his pants four days ago and it does not work now. Please let me know if you think they can be prepared. Thanks, Mike Shanley"

I sent back instructions on how to send them in and he sent them with $80 in cash to have me examine them.

They arrived days later, I went through them and I was able to get the water immersed 8GB 3rd Gen Nano working perfectly with no additional parts being needed.

Ultimately sent back this message as a result

"Mike,

I have the Nano working again. no parts were required.

The video is quite different. Water had moved through the scroll wheel on the left side and damaged the logic board. I was able to kind of clean up the corrosion but I can't get the scroll wheel to work. The controls for it are permanently destroyed. To make it work you would need another logic board, that is $90.

Unless you have a degree of sentimentality toward the iPod, this may not prove and effective repair.

An alternative concept would be....

He hadn't realized the 5th Gen had been water exposed. He settled on me refunding $20 of the $40 he sent for the video iPod.

This is the working 3rd Gen Nano which cost him $40 to get working again.

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Daniel Smerken sent in a 5th Gen video iPod that had a mechanically failed hard drive from Olympia, Washington.
He used PayPal to make payment.

The replacement drive was $60 and labor/return shipping was $40

It was sent back fixed the same day it arrived, so he got his iPod back and working in less than a week from when he sent it.

Fixed - Total cost $100.

The first thing I do in the morning is respond to email... in fact though out the day...
I give priority to email over anything except someone being here in person. Email gives me a chance to elucidate things that are sometimes more complex to grasp.

I got an email from Lisa Simmons in Orlando, Florida about her Black 8GB 3rd Gen Nano that read,

"Hey I need to find out if you can fix my nano and how much it would be. I have a Black 8gb 3rd Gen Nano that I not only washed in the washing machine but also dried. There is moisture visible inside the unit. I have also slightly bent the case a bit trying to open it before finding your site. I'm so frustrated and upset over this. I know it's the weekend but if you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be amazing. My number is xxx-xxx-xxxx and my name is Lisa. Located in Orlando, FL.

Thanks.

Lisa"

I actually called her to discuss the problem and to tell her that it fit within my experience and ability. She sent it in and used PayPal to pay my $40 labor/return shipping fee.

I was able to get hers to work again perfectly, even though she damaged the backplate. I did have to replace the LCD screen which was $22.

Her total cost was $62 to get her iPod back and working with all of her songs still on it.

Fixed - Total cost $62.
