Charles Adametz emailed me from Rohnert Park, California a few miles from here. The message read,
"Hello, I have a 5th generation 80gb video/color ipod, recently the middle button will not work as well as the wheel and other buttons stutter when trying to use them, I'm bummed and would like to have it fixed ASAP! I live in Rohnert Park"

I called him to discuss it, because the 5th with scroll wheel problems in 299 out of 300 cases has logic board problems. It's a condition where moisture has gotten in through the scroll wheel leading to corrosion on the logic board in the area of scroll wheel control. He thought the moisture possibility was real based on his using it at the gym and sweat being the source.

Rarely is it the Application Specific Integrated Circuit on the scroll wheel that's failed.

He brought it by on Tuesday afternoon and it was actually a 6th Gen video iPod o not a 5th Gen, (he like me is also a runner so I showed him what I use for that). The 6th Gen has a whole different scroll wheel failure ratio, but when I took it apart and reseated all the connections I was able to make it work correctly.

Total cost was $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Jeff Dargis sent in his iPod Nano 3rd Gen from Marrietta, Georgia.
Like many others, his Black 8GB model that he bought for $200 had been put through the washing machine but he had hope I would be able to restore back to usefulness.

There is always some doubt if I can make things work again, but I don't give up easily. I am able to fix 7 out of 8 water immersion cases of Nano 3rd Gen's and his was also a 'save'.

The total cost to get his iPod back working again was $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Steve Nichols called me from Bryon Center, Michigan about his 1st Generation iPod Touch.
The device would turn on using the button at the top and you can go 'into' the menus on the screen but the Home button which takes you back out to the top had zero utility. This started after he dropped it.

I explained I had fixed this problem before. Look Here at the Evan Testa 1st Gen Touch. In that case the, he also dropped the iPod and the domed contact closure slipped so it would make contact correctly. I had imagined Steve had the same problem. In fact the interior of Steve's Touch was covered in lint. This fine lint had migrated under the domed contact closure and acting like the dielectric that lint is and prohibited the switch contact from being made.

I cleaned it out and then used a fine trace of contact cement to glue the dome back in place.

The last photo shows the switch in use with "settings" menu shrinking to be replaced by the Home Screen.

Total cost to get it working again was $60.

When he got it back he sent this message,

"Got it today and it works great!
Can I give you feedback or anything like that on your web page?"

Fixed - Total cost $60.
