I was playing an on-line poker tournament
(yes, but I'm really good at it as a consequence of good and high math skills as a product of my computer science training), when an email arrived from Neil Carlburg who lives in Greeley, Colorado and has a business called "too much fun DJ" service. He has a 6th Gen video iPod in Silver with an 80GB drive. The message read,

"Hello Frank,

I have an 80g iPod Classic that was dropped in our hot tub and I'd like to discuss the feasibility of a repair with you.

Thank you!
Neil"

I paused my play for a moment and sent him back a message within a minute telling him specifics on how to sent it in and what my recent history on that model was (14 out of 15 I can get working typically).

It arrived a few days later. I was able to get all of it working again but it required two parts be replaced. The LCD had bad enough corrosion the backlight wouldn't turn on and the battery had just permanently shorted out altogether.

The battery was $19 and the LCD was $41 with labor/return shipping being $40. For a total of $100 he got his iPod back working perfectly.

Fixed - Total cost $100.

Alex Stevenson sent in his 5th Gen 60GB White video iPod from Aberdeen, Washington with a note that read,
"Hey, I got this iPod from a friend in the condition you see it now. If you could get her running I'd be very thankful. I was able to get it working, even on iTunes but then it stopped working again.

PS, I don't care if it end's up mismatched. As long as I can use it, that's fine with me."

In the envelope was basically a pile of parts. Some of the needed things were missing. There was some real damage to logic board. The cinch lock for the battery connection missing and so was the headphone jack cinch locking lever (typically terminal right there).

I was able to provide the needed small parts and created a work around for the head phone jack so it worked again in real stereo.

Total cost for Alex including shipping back... $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Phil Galante called me from San Francisco about his 5th Generation video iPod.
He had hearing from just the right ear and wanted the earphone/hold-lock switch assemble replaced. While on the phone I also gave him background on the nature of the battery in his iPod and how it would need replacement soon so doing it was practical since it would here and opened. He agreed.

He sent it in and I had the repair done a day later. The headphone part was $28, the battery was $23 (this was the 80GB model) and labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $91.
