Frank Rainwater, got a hold of me from Corte Madera, California
(28 miles away) by phone. He had an iPod that by description sounded like a 4th Gen Black and White model. Frank was insistent that he had a scroll wheel problem and needed the scroll wheel replaced because he had already done some preliminary work and narrowed it down to the scroll wheel as the only problem.
He drove up and while he was here I took apart his iPod which proved to be a 4th Gen Photo iPod with the color screen in the U2 model. After getting another U2 Black/Red scroll out, I replaced the bad one. It didn't make a difference and tried 2 others while he was watching so Frank could tell the scroll wheel wasn't at fault.
I switched out the other parts until I found the correct diagnosis. The problem was the "scroll wheel" (really data input) port on his logic board was blown and wouldn't receive signals from his perfectly good scroll wheel.
I replaced the logic board and things worked perfectly. While I was at it, we put in a new battery.
To get the Photo back working was a $35 logic board and a $40 labor fee. The battery was $15.
He also brought with him a 1st Generation Mini iPod in Green that he had given his daughter a few
years ago but not long after she dropped something on the LCD smashing it so she couldn't use it.
That iPod had been in a drawer for nearly 3 years. I replaced the LCD and it worked perfectly. I
charged him only the $40 labor rate and gave him the LCD as a process of doing the work.
Here's both of them fixed.
Fixed - Total cost..$130.

Tony Kuzmanich lives in Sebastopol, California
(about 8 miles west of here). He had determined the battery in his Nano first generation wasn't holding near the charge it should and called to make an appointment to have me replace the battery.
He showed up in mid-afternoon around 2:30 and I told to come back at 4:00PM and it would be finished.
He showed up at 4PM the device worked like a champ.
It cost $15 for the battery and $40 for the labor/soldering work.
Fixed - Total cost $55.

Richard Dupaquier emailed from Harvey, Louisiana
(1800 miles away) asking about the problem he was having with hearing from both ears in his video iPod. It was the classic case of dropping the iPod with the earbuds plugged in and destroying the right side hearing by having the iPod land on the headphone plug. This drives the earplug so far into the jack that it breaks away the spring clip that completes the connection for the right side hearing.
He sent it in. It arrived on Wednesday January 2nd was repaired and sent back all on that same day.
The headphone jack part was $35 and the labor with return shipping was the standard $40 for a total of $75.
All of his music and videos were undisturbed and ready for use when he got it back a few days later.
Fixed - Total cost..$150.
