I got an iPod sent to me from Palatka, Florida by Maria Rees.
She said "the iPod quit working" which wasn't exactly true. She was having a problem with her 5th Gen Video ipod. It wouldn't go through to a complete boot up at times and other times it might but wouldn't accept syncing, also her 80GB drive showed 0 songs and 2GB available.

All that pointed to a failed hard drive. I put a new one in and it worked perfectly. The replacement drive was $100 and labor was $40. Works perfectly now.

Fixed - Total cost $140.

Harrison Wurster called me from Council Bluffs, Iowa.
He had been a student at the jesuit run Creighton University. Like me he is the recipient of "catholic" education. He put his iPod Nano 2nd gen through the washer a couple of weeks earlier. It hadn't worked since and like me (Iuse the same model for a work out/exercise device) he depended on it every day.

He sent it in and paid me the $40 through PayPal. By the next afternoon I had it working again. All of his songs and playlists were still on it.

Works perfect again, total cost $40

Fixed - Total cost $40.

Rachael Robins called me from Seattle, Washington.
Around August 6th while she was rafting on the Colorado River, her 6th Gen video iPod and her son's Ninetendo DSi were in a "dry bag" that opened up. This allowed water, a lot of water and sand to into the dry bag where it worked its way into everything. She frankly considered it all a loss but then found me on the internet.

We chatted through the process and at the end of the conversation she was committed to sending them in. They arrived a few days later.

The iPod arrived with water still pooled inside. You can see it trapped between the LCD screen and the faceplate in this photo.

The iPod I had to take it c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y apart including every shred of the hard drive to clean all the water and sand out. Then I slowly put it back together, testing each step as I went.

When I got to the end I discovered that I had it all working *except* the battery, which was 2 1/2 years old anyway and needed to be replaced probably no matter what had happened to the iPod. Failing batteries in iPods exhibit the failure but bloating or puffing up, hers was puffed up before I started.

The iPod had all of its songs and videos still on it, and works perfectly. It was $19 for the battery and $40 labor/return shipping. More on the DSi when I get it done.

Fixed - Total cost $59.
