Dean Wagner actually called me from Westerville Ohio (43081) about his 6th Gen video iPod.
He was having a no luck at syncing or charging the battery in their 6th Gen video iPod. In fact the cable wasn't exactly fitting into the bottom of the iPod but that wasn't revealed to me right away.

Through the conversation, I realized what we were dealing with is pins inside the docking port that probably had become bent over. I asked Dean to flip it over and look. Sure enough. The pins are flat metal strips that lie in a 'pin bed' made of molded plastic. Once the pins have been bent (really folded is the correct term) they have taken what is known metalurgically as a "set". Metal will never bend or back again on the same line. To flatten out a set the best you can is make a second fold which may offset the first set. In this case, the flat pin in a pin bed that receives it's conductive contact by sliding a one metal plane over another.

In this set of circumstances there are just two things you can do.

1) You can use an Exacto knife and cut the pins away at the back of the port and hope none of the pins are needed, which is possible. There are only 4 pins needed to sync and charge a video iPod.

2) You can replace the logic board, (because the docking port itself isn't replaceable)

Dean went with two. The replacement logic board was $70 and labor/return shipping was $40

Works perfectly again.

Fixed - Total cost $110.

Ray Chmielecki lives in Wellington Ohio (44090) and called me about his White 5th Generation video iPod
which had hearing from the left side only. Like many people he bought a second set of headphones to check the problem. The new set didn't make a difference and he called me after finding me through a Yahoo search.

This problem I've repaired many times I told him. The iPod arrived a few days later and was repaired and sent back the same day.

The headphone jack was $28 and labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $68.

Tim Bauer called from Sausalito California (94965) about his 5th Gen video iPod.
He had basically overcharged the battery in it to death and needed it replaced. He actually went to a Mac store in the area and they referred him to me. I explained the nature of the Lithium iOn battery in an iPod so he had a reference for how to use the next, new one.

He sent the iPod up and the repair done and on the way back the same day. The battery was $16 and labor/return shipping was $40

Fixed - Total cost $56.
