I got a call from Laurent Boucher. He lives in San Anselmo California (94960)
but was originally from France. Yes, he's a commercial chef... The call was about his iPod Touch 1st Generation. He had hearing from just one side of the head phones and wanted to know what might be done about it. I reviewed with him the cause. In the Touch first Gen this from dropping the device with the earbuds plugged in. In this case it leaves right side hearing only.
The Touch models are made with the intent they never be repaired so the fact that there are people like me, that can make them work again has to be thorny for Apple. The complexity of the repair stems from how the jack is fastened to the logic board of the Touch. Apple has FoxConn (the sub-contractor that actually manufactures the iPods, iPhones and laptops) use a high temperature solder and basically "flash welds" the headphone jack in place. The high temperature de-soldering and soldering in of the new part is tricky, but I am passionate about getting peoples iPods working again so they don't have to buy a new one. This repair requires desoldering the old one and soldering in the new one with a high temp soldering pencil that has to hit 940 degrees.
The replacement headphone jack is $29 and the labor/return shipping for Laurent was $60 so it was an $89 repair, which came off perfectly.
Fixed - Total cost $89.

Jeannie Van Curen called me about her son Justin's 32GB 3rd Gen ipod Touch.
They live in Dayton Ohio (45440) and Justin's father is the Chief Information Officer at National Cash Register (NCR). They are moving to Atlanta because NCR is relocating. Before leaving... it seems Justin dropped his Touch i the toilet....
I got it a few days after the phone call. After going through it I was able to get everything about it working again, including the battery re-charging and the WiFi connectivity.
I did have to replace the LCD screen because the backlight on it wouldn't work and that was a $44 part... which brought the repair to $104 but well below the $400 it was new.
Fixed - Total cost $104.
