Gayle Prentice lives here in Santa Rosa California and called me about two iPhone 3G models
she was having trouble with. In one case she had a 8GB iPhone that had a cracked LCD though the upper glass was fine. The other was a 16GB 3G model that had what appeared to be a failed digitizer, she was not able to make unlock the phone because the bottom third of the display wouldn't respond.
She left them off for 90 minutes and I took them apart. The broken LCD, I was able to replace and things went smoothly there.
The digitizer one was more of a problem initially. I needed to determine if the problem was the digitizer necessitating the upper glass being replaced. I worked my way through it and ultimately was able to get it to work with no additional parts being required. There were two oddities, one was the connection and the other was a faulty OS load.
The broken LCD iPhone was $90 and the other was $60 and Gayle considered it a very good result. Privately she thought she had used a bad wall adapter and destroyed the 16GB model which was her personal phone.
This is her picking them both up
Fixed - Total cost $150.

Chris Camp is a finish carpenter and gave me a call from San Anselmo California (94960)
to discuss his iPhone 3G 8GB. His Home button stopped working and was referred by the San Rafael Mac Repair people to me. I stepped through the possibilities with him, that it could be one of three things. We settled on the a failed power/docking module as the likely cause because "his iPhone had never been opened", "it was still factory new".
He brought it up the next day to me and went to have coffee down the street at the Starbucks that also has some of photos hanging in it.
As it happens there were oddities about his iPhone that could only explained by it having been opened before... di-electric paper to keep wire harnesses separated... never done at the factory. Also it was missing a dust shield around the home key.
But the cause of the problem was that one of the two grounding springs that activate the Home key had snapped off. I was able to get his phone back and working again within an hour. It required replacing the mid-chassis, it's electronics and the upper glass. Works like a charm and cost $120. Here he is picking it up.
Fixed - Total cost $120.
