Susan Kostel called me from San Francisco, California
where she lives and works. She has a Pink 1st Generation Mini iPod that was given to her as a gift but he battery time is too short to make it useful.
She sent it in with a check for $50 ($10 battery and $40 labor/shipping). I replaced the battery and sent her ipod back the next day.
Fixed - Total cost..$50.

Brendan Smith called me from San Francisco.
His video iPod had lost its scroll wheel control. He already was in the process of running a restore and was not able to make the selection button work to choose English as the language so he lost the compass point buttons and the scroll wheel functionality.
I explained that it was very un-likely that a scroll wheel replacement would solve this. The compass point switches are a part of the logic board. For them and the scroll wheel to not indicates a logic board failure or damage. In my experience this is usually from water getting into the iPod through the surrounding edge of the scroll wheel and pooling in the upper left quadrant of the front of the logic board.
It arrived a few days later and I took it apart to reveal exactly what I had expected to see.
These are shots of the logic board in that upper left front area and the inside of the plastic faceplate in the same area. Notice how the lead oxide corrosion had built up so much that is was now staining the inside of the faceplate.
I sent him a message outlining four options:
1) I fix your iPod by replacing the logic board. The logic board is $90.
2) I send it back un-repaired with a $20 refund. You can take it to an
Apple store and trade it in for 10% ($25) off a new one
3) I buy your un-repaired iPod (to become a cadaver donor) for $55 instead of Apple buying it for
$25
4) I buy your un-repaired iPod for $45 and then send you back another even
less working iPod that you can take to Apple store and trade in that
less working one for 10% ($25) off a new one. In essence trading a $10 bill for a $25 dollar bill.
He chose..... to get the new logic board!
Fixed - Total cost $130.

Leo Estrada sent in a Nano 1st Generation iPod
with a standard problem, it had the hold lock switch in the lock position permanently. This happens to a certain number of them at some point in time because of Apple's design. Apple designed these with fairly cheap switches and when the switched fail... they fail in the open or locked position. A wiser organization would have the switch fail leaving the device in a useful state.. just in case.
I took it apart and re-soldered the switch down, while I was at I also used contact cement to re-build the scroll wheel which had already had a hard life.
Total cost to Leo was $40
Fixed - Total cost..$40.
