Barry Nelson called me one day from Petaluma (95954) to set up a repair appointment.
His 5th Gen Video iPdod had a battery that was holding a negligible charge. He had actually called Apple to seek advice on the matter and people who work the call center for Apple in Kentucky went on to explain... the battery wasn't made any more and that he would have to buy a new iPod.
This is fairly standard behavior for Apple staff. No matter what the Apple geniuses tell you, they are really salespeople given an elegant title to infer authority. Since we are trained from childhood to respect authority when someone with apparent authority on the subject makes a pronouncement, you tend to regard it as true without deeper exploration. When an iPod is determined to have been exposed to water, Apple Geniuses presume them never to be repairable and deem it necessary for you to buy a new one. Had the experience yet?
By the way... Apple still uses the same battery in their "Classic 160" which is still in current production. They have used the same battery since for the past 5 years since 2005.
He did a quick internet search and found I was nearby. The phone call lead him to the fact that I knew what I was doing and to bring it to me for repair.
The repair took less than an hour. The battery was $16 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $56.
