Art Smith lives in Brandon Mississippi (39047). This case started with an email that read,
"I have an iPhone 4 which quit accepting a charge this morning and is now completely dead. The local Apple store tells me it is not the battery, but rather a bad logic board. I don't care about the phone, but there are some videos on there from this past weekend of my kid's first birthday party. What are my options as far as recovering those videos from the phone?
Thanks!

and got back,
"Sounds great. I live nowhere near you. I found your site through some google searches. I live down in Mississippi. I will package my phone tonight along with a check for $60 and a USB flash drive (the phone is only 8GB so I'll send at least an 8GB drive) and mail it tomorrow to:

If it makes it any easier, I don't need all the photos/videos. I backed up my videos on Friday 10/26 and my photos auto upload to iCloud. What I need are the videos from Saturday, October 27th. They are from my daughters 1st birthday and are the only videos we have.
Thanks!

I guess he had gotten a new iPhone 5
The phone arrived with a Sandisk flash drive a few days later. The problem with the logic board, had to do with power passing through the logic board beyond the battery connection and the battery recharge circuits on the logic board.
This type of problem is typically the result of car adapter being used to charge the phone and having the charger's step down transformer fail. It basically smokes the "power ins" on the board.
I solder leads to the board so I could circumvent the problem and used a larger LiPo battery that I use for Arduino projects to power the phone's logic board enough to pulls copies of things off him.
I got all of the photos and movies, I got all of his contacts and I got all of the 10,00 text message back and forth off the phone for him and put them in a directory on the flash drive called, "client_art_smith".
The total cost of the 'near impossible' data recovery was $60
