Like many of my repair jobs, this one started with a phone call.... from Herndon Virginia (20171).
The conversation was with Curtis Hunt and the problem he had was with the stereo hearing of his 5th Gen video iPod. I covered my knowledge of the problem and it's solution and then while still on the phone I sent him instructions on the matter and how to send it in .
I got this replay,
"Hello Frank,
It was great speaking with you today, I'll print this email as a confirmation of what's requested to be done with my defective unit. Its a 5th Generation Ipod requiring the repair of the headphone jack, and if you could please replace the faceplate (screen cover) as there as been crazing damage due to exposure to sun. I will pay for this service as agreed via paypal. Thank you for this in advance and could please send cards if you have them I will pass them on to friends and co-workers as your work has been great in the past. I live with my I pod as I am a runner and am in great need of it again. I am appreciative of your advice regarding the running I will put it to use soon.
On another topic I presently own an sprint android phone, I am interested in purchasing an unlocked i-phone wondering if you could give me some information regarding the security features of the i-phone vs the android.

When a device old is here, I gift into the project things that will make the iPod look better, which is what the faceplate conversation is about. When a repaired device looks more toward new, it is treated and regarded better plus it props up the self esteem of the owner.
The iPod arrived a few days later and I had it repaired and on the way back later the same afternoon. It required replacing the headphone jack/hold lock switch and the faceplate and I also included a far nicer looking backplate. The iPod looked very much like new.
The total cost including shipping back was just $63
This case started from an email with Phil Vrankovich who lives in Oakland California (94611) that read :
"Hello Frank,
It just so happened that my wife's iPod classic, 80 gb, and my iPod 80 gb (4th or 5th Gen) have both recently quit working. How is that for coincidence!
Her iPod just makes a clicking sound but never boots up. From what I've read it sounds like it may be a disk drive problem."
I responded back with,
"There were epic floods in southeast asia a few months ago taking 65% og the hard drive manufacturing off line for still several months into the future. The cost of drives has basically doubled since then.
There are two options at this point.
1) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a new 30GB drive (more than enough space really). That repair, parts, labor and return shipping is $90
2) replace the original 80 GB hard drive with a good working pull 80GB drive . This would be a working drive taken at an early age from it's mother iPod and left to grow up in my care until I could find a good home for it. That repair, parts, labor and return shipping is $100
If this were my decision to make, I would go with the 30GB. The larger sizes are rarely needed since the battery fully charged in this iPod will be able to play just 1/25 of the songs if it were fully filled... that's on a 30GB drive and it would only be able to play 1/15 if the 30GB drive were filled with videos. Since it will be cabled to your computer to charge between 15 and 25 times before playing it all once, there is more than enough opportunity to change out the songs on the iPod while it connected to your iTunes Library. Remember the Library is the repository and the iPod player is merely a chalk board that can be changed continually. "
And the 30GB drive is the option he sent the iPod up to me for.
Total cost to get it back working again perfectly was $90
