Mike Blanchard sent in his daughter Sarah's Photo iPod from Vallejo, California.
I feel fairly sure she another iPod now and this one was just set aside to wait for someone else to need an iPod.
It was acting up but it all problems seemed to center on the battery even though the hard drive is kind of old. I think the battery was overcharged enough that ot didn't work portably and was retired.
With a new battery in it, the device booted and worked with no problem. It charged correctly and had good data connectivity through the USB and Firewire ports.
The battery was $15 and labor was $40
Fixed - Total cost $55.

Travis Bennett from Austin, Texas dropped his iPod in water.
It is a standard repair for me and he sent his Black 5th Gen video iPod.
In this case there was too much wrong with it to make repairing it practical. I wasn't able to get the logic board to work, but wanted to make sure it wasn't just a scroll wheel problem. It turns out both were bad. Then in testing the LCD I found the backlight wouldn't turn on and floresce so that also would have to be replaced if it were to work.
The LCD was the tipping point where fixing it became impractical and I returned
the device to Travis with a $20 refund.

John Schneider found me on the internet because of Clifton B. from Suwanee, Georgia
comments on my work. John sent in his 5th Gen 80GB from Atlanta to have the headphone jack hold/lock switch replaced.
He sent it and paid using PayPal. It arrived a few days later on July 14th 2008.
I had the repair finished and it was back on the way to him the next day.
It was $35 for the part and $40 for the labor/return shipping.
Fixed - Total cost $75.
