Mark Givens reached me by email from Washington DC.
He had a set of rather unusual circumstances with his 5th Gen video iPod. No matter what position the hold/lock switch was set, the lock icon stayed on and the scroll wheel and compass point switches wouldn't respond.

He sent it in with $40 to have me look at it, determine if it was fixable and what it might need.

Ultimately it was something I've never experienced before. The hold/lock switch had actually failed in the IC that connects through the headphone jack.

He PayPal'd in the $35 for the part and I replaced the head/lock wire harness. With the $40 labor/return shipping it came to $75.

Looks good, works beautifully.

Fixed - Total cost $75.

Joel Saunders reached me from Rexford, New York
in an email that read,

"Hi Frank, I've read your website and I'm in need of your diagnosis of my troubled 30 MB Video iPOD. I bought a remanufactured unit and it was working great until a quick dip in the pool. Of course, I took it apart, dried it out, and got the "your battery is very low please wait" message of death. After unsuccessful charging I figured I try buying a new battery & see how it goes. No dice, so I'm guessing it may be a logic board issue like you describe on your site. I did hear the hard drive spin up earlier in the process. Hoping that is still good. Anyway, I'll be sending it to you with the standard $40 check."

It arrived a few days later. I was able to get evereything to work except.... the logic board. I called him to let him know the specifics and sent a follow up email that included a reminder from the conversation we had,

"I was able to get the LCD to work, and the drive to work so it's just the logic board that needs to be replaced. I've sent a PayPal request for the needed $90

The peer to peer file sharing program I use can be downloaded and used at no charge from this link *and this link only*.

http://shareaza.sourceforge.net/

It is fairly easy to use, and think superior to Limewire."

Joel PayPal'd into me the needed $90 and I was able to get it all working perfectly. His drive and all the files on it weren't touched and play perfectly on his newly repaired iPod.

It cost $90 for the logic board and $40 for labor/return shipping.

Fixed - Total cost $130.

Michael Anderson called from Vallejo, California.
He has a 4th Gen Photo iPod with a 30GB drive. Like many Windows users has PC "crashed" and took all of files with it so his iTunes Library was eradicated.

His iPod needed a battery... but what he really needed was for me to find a way to get his songs off of iPod in such a way that he could add them back again to his new iPod.

It arrived a day or tow later and the file extraction was a bear! The drive would over heat and go offline repeatedly. Windows being lame would not recognize the device on the USB when it was re-booted so I had to continually reboot my PC.

Over two days I was able to extract his 3336 songs. Then I re-formatted his iPod and copied them over to it.

I sent a link to him by email on how to add them to his PC iTunes Library again permanently.

The battery was $16 and labor was $40... the deal of a life time for the effort I made to extract his songs.

Notice the formatted size of the drive and the available space. The difference is "his music files" on the drive for him.

He sent me an email after he received the iPod, followed my instructions and restored his iTunes Library. It read,

"Hi Frank. It's Mike. Just a short line to tell you how impressed I am with the results of your service/operation. My IPod works great, I have all of my music back, and I am just as happy as a clam. I have told my friends, boss, and even people that I do not like that well about you. Frank, You Rock! Thank you, Michael"

Fixed - Total cost $56.
