Chris Posthuma emailed from Irvine, California.
He felt the logic board in his 60GB 4th Gen Photo iPod had failed. He described it this
way, "I believe my iPod needs its logic board repaired -- I get intermittent, hit or miss
sad faces at startup. I have a 4th generation 60GB iPod with a color screen. If I read your
website correctly, the total price for repair is $75. I live in Southern California and
would need to mail the iPod to you."
I replied the price was correct but there is sometimes a 3 week wait for a
logic board for a Photo. The good news was, he was now first in line.
When it arrived 3 days later, I already had the needed logic board for him
so the repair was performed the day it arrived and his finished iPod was sent
back the next day.
Works perfectly, total cost $75 with a total out of hand experience from
to me and back again of less than 5 days.
Fixed - Total cost $75.

Andrew Fales sent me an email from Boise, Idaho.
It read,
I have a iPod nano (3rd generation) 4 GB. I fell into the river with it in my pocket. It was under water for less than 2 seconds. I dried it out and then it worked for a while (about 24 hours) but the backlight did not work. Now, it is just flashing the apple logo faintly (I tried to reset it. I thought that might work for some reason)."
I replied that water immersion work is always on a case by case basis. Sometimes things work out, other times parts may be needed and in other cases you can't bring it back to life at all.
He sent it down and ultimately elected to pay the $40 using PayPal. I opened up and processed the device the day it arrived. Even though it looked it very good shape I wasn't able to make any part of it work. Even when some parts of the device don't work, if the logic board still does you will get different tones to point you to the problem that needs to be solved.
In his case no tones. It was a perfectly dead logic board and the LCD didn't work in another unit.
I wasn't able to revive it and sent it back with a $20 refund.

David Lukoff contacted me by email from Petaluma
about his daughter's 5th Gen video iPod. His daughter had determined the battery in her iPod had failed and then... using an instant training video on the internet decided to make the repair herself.
She decided to go into the iPod wrong way and cut the headphone jack ribbon connection and then kind of fluffed her way through the battery install. Changing the battery didn't make her iPod work so he sent it to me.
After I took it apart and tested everything, I sent a message that read, "Okay, the problems with the device. I took it apart to test each part of it.
1) she chose the wrong side to enter the device and cut through the earbud headphone jack cable so it needs to be replaced. That part is $35
2) The logic board doesn't work which is why I thought the LCD didn't work. The logic board is a $90 part.
3) the LCD does work, I tested that in another system and got it fluoresce and show a good screen. The failed logic board is why the LCD wasn't working.
4) The hard drive does work. I was able to format it in another system add a couple of songs to it and play them i another working system.
I'm going to bet, since the logic board didn't work, she didn't get a screen. Because she didn't get a screen, she thought it was the battery (though a failed battery would show a specific error on the screen). The battery installation then led to other problems.
The logic board, labor and headphone system total $165 and that assumes the battery sent with it works (but it seems to).
I really cannot say that this would be a cost effective repair, an iPod of this vintage sells typically for not more $140 ~ $150
